A continual problem for me: I freeze up when asked to name my “Favorite” anything. Much easier, I can name Five of something. This time, rather than ranking these books as favorites, these are five books that have defined my journey as a fiction reader and writer.

1. A Child’s Garden of Verses by Robert Louis Stevenson
This book generates memories of sitting on the front porch swing with my Daddy, listening to him read, eventually reading and memorizing the lyrical words of this classic author’s poetry. Definitely sparked my love of books.

2. Christy by Catherine Marshall
Fast forward to the first Christian fiction book I read. I was attracted by historic romance, and loved that all aspects of young love were covered. Physical, emotional, and spiritual feelings were on display. Now, I was on the search for more.

3. As Waters Gone By by Cynthia Ruchti
One of the best discoveries I have made. This author creates multi-layered characters resulting in wonderful stories that stay with me forever. Women’s fiction as opposed to romance, this book acknowledged my desire to deepen and improve my own writing.

4. To Love a Prince by Rachel Hauck
An example of my continued love for romantic books. Rachel’s books completely entrance me, mixing reality and magic. Another author who inspires my writing.

5. Hope Takes the Reins by Jenny Carlisle
All dusty roads lead to this one. The combined climax and beginning of my fiction journey. I am so grateful that Scrivenings Press believed in me, leading to my first published novel in 2022. Now, with three full length and two novellas, I continue my dream job, while striving to reflect God’s glory for the benefit of others.
My website is intended to be a community. Here’s your chance to participate- What are five books that help others understand your reading and writing habits? I’d love to hear from you in the comments.
