Pick one favorite of anything? Very hard.Name five of the movies that inspire me? The ones I don’t mind watching over and over? Easier.
With the latest summer temperatures creeping over the century mark again, Curling up in a theater seat, or on the couch or a recliner sounds perfect. Here is my “best” list. I would love to hear from you in the comments. Which ones do you like? Why?
- Made of Honor: This rom-com has most likely been overlooked by most of you. It tops my list today for one reason, the location. The premise is familiar to readers of romance- Best friends have been hiding their true feelings, and the female is about to make a big mistake- marrying the wrong man. Can the young man designated to be her most trusted attendant, her “maid of honor” stop the wedding in time to confess his true feelings and change their destiny? Most of the action takes place at the MacLeod’s family estate- Dunvegan Castle on the Isle of Skye, Scotland. Best reason for watching multiple times.
- Elf: Hard to believe this one has been out long enough to be considered a classic, but it is the one Christmas movie I insist on seeing at least once during my most favorite time of year. Will Farrell’s innocent portrayal of the “fish out of water” trope is spot on. Also, the late Bob Newhart is the perfect “Dad” figure as Papa Elf, and Mary Steenburgen charms with her acceptance of this overgrown new son that appears on her doorstep. Best of all, Ed Asner as Santa. Will there ever be a better one? I think not.
- It’s a Wonderful Life: The older Christmas classic never fails to make me teary-eyed. Jimmy Stewart steps into his character and makes us cheer for him from the first scene to the last. His triumphant victory over the mean-spirited man who runs the town encourages us to keep trying. Of course, Clarence the Angel is perfect, too. He reminds us that God cares about every one of us, and we all play a part in His plan.
- The Wizard of Oz: This historic movie holds so many memories for me. It came out when my mom was small, and she loved watching it with us each year. Unfortunately, at the age of about five, I had to leave the room when the wicked witch gazed into her crystal ball while she held Dorothy captive in her evil castle. Entirely too sad for my tender heart. Thankfully, I resumed watching at some point, and I have always loved the music, and the performances of Judy Garland and her co-horts the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Man and the Scarecrow. Who could ask for better best friends on such an exciting journey?
- The Sound of Music: Again, it’s all about the music, and Julie Andrews brilliant portrayal of the nanny who wins the hearts of lonely children and their father. I have also seen stage productions of this show. Next time you want to watch it, just let me know. I’ll be right there with you.
