It is human nature to always seek something better. There must be something more glorious than this present world we are plodding through. Someday, things will be perfect.
In Old Testament times, the people of God looked to Moses to take them out of slavery to the promised land of milk and honey. Once there, they were still waiting for the Messiah, the new king, who would establish his kingdom and make everything perfect for them.
When Jesus arrived, the heavens proclaimed that He was the promised king. But the humans in the neighborhood were reluctant. How could this poor child, born in a bed borrowed from farm animals be the new ruler they had been looking for? And exactly what would the great kingdom look like?
Jesus recognized our unbelief, and set about teaching us through parables. His stories begin with “The kingdom of God is like . . .”
Even after His death and resurrection, the early Christians were longing for a better life than what was happening around them. Where was this promised kingdom?
In Paul’s letter to the congregation of Jesus’s followers at Collossi, he reminds them of a truth. The kingdom is here! And We are It!
“Giving thanks to the Father who has qualified US to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has delivered US from the power of darkness and conveyed US into the kingdom of the Son of His love.” Colossians 1: 12-13 NKJV
This is it! His kingdom is you, his followers. And it never ends!
