Continuing our holiday vacation at the beach, our third story takes us to America’s favorite paradise, Hawaii. Linda Fulkerson’s contribution to Candy Cane Wishes and Saltwater Dreams is “A Pennie for Your Thoughts.”
Jenny: “Hi Linda, Thanks for stopping by today. We are all ready for Christmas, and most everyone dreams of a trip to Hawaii. Have you ever spent Christmas on a beach?”
Linda: “Yes. I lived in Hawaii for nearly four years. They have a lot of unique Christmas traditions there as well as some fun Christmas music. I mentioned a singer/comedian in my novella, A Pennie for Your Thoughts.”
Jenny: “Novellas intrigue me. Was it difficult to keep your story short? Would you like to write about these characters again?”
Linda: “It wasn’t difficult for me to keep the story short because I planned this to be a novella from the beginning. The main difference when writing a novella versus a novel is to keep the cast of characters small and to avoid subplots.
Although I enjoyed writing this story, I don’t have plans to write about these characters again, but I’m a “never say never” kind of person, and you never know about characters. If they start nagging me in the future to tell more about their stories …”
Jenny: ” What dessert do you look forward to most this holiday season?”
Linda: “It’s not technically dessert, but my favorite holiday dish is Sweet Potato Casserole with brown sugar/pecan topping,”
Jenny: “We are kindred spirits. The savory dishes are my weakness, too. And fixing sweet potatoes that way makes them just sweet enough! What about music? Do you have a favorite Christmas carol?”
Linda: “I really love Christmas music. If I had to pick, I’d probably choose Nat King Cole’s version of ‘The Christmas Song,’ followed closely by Pentatonix’s recording of ‘Mary, Did You Know?’”
Jenny: “Did writing about the beach make you want to go there? Any new travel plans on the horizon?”
Linda: “I’d probably choose mountains over beaches, but I do love the beach. We are almost always on the go, and autumn is camping season. We’ve been on the road four of the past six weeks and have another short trip coming up. We usually winterize the camper in mid-to-late November, but my husband and I just had a ‘what if’ discussion about going to the Gulf Coast in late February. Who knows?!”
Jenny: “Thanks so much, for coming by today, Linda. I can’t wait to read about your friend Pennie and her adventure in Hawaii!”

A Pennie for Your Thoughts by Linda Fulkerson – When the Lakeshore Homeowner’s Association threatens to condemn the cabin Pennie Vaughn inherited from her foster mother, her only hope of funding the needed repairs lies in winning a travel blog contest. Trouble is, Pennie never goes anywhere. Should she use the all-expenses paid Hawaiian vacation offered to her by her ex-fiancé? The trip that would have been their honeymoon?
