Somehow it is comforting to know that even the wisest man who ever lived questioned his purpose in life. In fact, the book of Ecclesiastes is sometimes referred to as an entire book that asks the question: Why?
Solomon expresses our frustration with trying to find meaning in this life. The first chapter confirms that trying to find fulfillment in earthly things is totally fruitless. “Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher; vanity of vanities, all is vanity.” Ecclesiastes 1:2. NKJV
Chapter three is more reassuring, reminding us that God has everything under control. “To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven.” Ecclesiastes 3: 1 NKJV
We get a sense that Solomon is preaching to himself. Chapter Five emphasizes the wisdom of holding our tongue. A familiar adage that may have been started by Abraham Lincoln or Mark Twain explains it like this:
“Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.” Solomon puts it his way: “Do not be rash with your mouth, and let not your heart utter anything hastily before God.” Ecclesiastes 5: 2 NKJV.
After all is said and done, the king who is famous for his wisdom concludes that no answers can be found without God. “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is man’s all.” Ecclesiastes 12: 13 NKJV
Jesus repeats this thought by telling us His purpose in coming to earth- “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” John 10: 10 (b) NKJV
Jesus gives us life, and purpose. We don’t need to waste time trying to find meaning without Him. A comforting and beautiful thought for today and every day.
