By now, my readers know that I write contemporary women’s fiction with a strong romantic thread. Most often, I read the same types of books. However, as a published author, I meet some of the most interesting people. This picture of my friend Dawn Ford was taken at a writer’s conference. All decked out in her “steampunk” outfit, she made quite a splash.
Today, my friend, Dawn is here to tell us about her new book, Woodencloak, a fantasy aimed at younger readers. I hope you will share this interview with your friends who love reading exciting books. Let’s hear from Dawn.
Jenny: “It’s so great to have you on my blog today. Can you tell us about your inspiration for your first book?”
Dawn: “I worked for Splickety Magazine, an online flash fiction magazine group, years ago and the owner who was editing one of my manuscripts challenged me to write a flash fiction piece from a sentence in that particular story. I sat down and finished it in less than two hours. I sent it in to one of the other editors to get feedback and they loved it so much they published it. It was my first published work. I liked the characters so much I developed a story around them, changing some details, but keeping the personalities and creating a unique storyworld around them.”
Jenny: “When it’s right, it’s right! That must have been a really exciting way to get started in this business. When you’re not busy writing, what other activities do you enjoy?”
Dawn: “I love thrift and antique shopping, watching my grandchildren, and crafting. I crochet amigurumi animals and have recently began using a Cricut machine.”
Jenny: “When you are writing, what type of music do you have playing in the background, or do you need total silence?”
Dawn: “If I’m not working in total silence, I listen to light instrumental music.”
Jenny: “What is the favorite feedback you have gotten from a reader?”
Dawn: ” I received some fan art of my characters from someone once. I remember thinking to myself that I’d really made it if someone loved my characters enough to draw them. I have them hanging in my office.”
Jenny: “Totally off-wall question- What is the most amazing thing you have seen in the past few days?”
Dawn: “The women in my family have been working on painting tumblers for fun. I love the patterns they have come up with as we’ve made them. Everything turned out so beautiful and it will always remind me of the fun we had while making them.”
Jenny: “Do you have any other parting words for your readers?”
Dawn: “My current book is about a flawed troll princess who is fierce, but not very big. If I were to give children advice, it would be to believe in yourself because you’re capable of becoming more than you imagine if you don’t let your fears and self-doubts get in the way.”
See, I told you Dawn and her books would intrigue you. I have downloaded her newest, Woodencloak and I can’t wait to get started!
