Stories of the ultimate American struggle, the Civil War, fascinate me. I live in an area that had been settled and civilized for more than a generation when political turmoil escalated into physical danger and sacrifice. I love reading of the bravery, the commitment to principle, the final realization that all of God’s children deserve freedom.
I took this picture of a new friend and her mom during a recent tour of a historic house in my hometown. It was good to meet so many young people who share my fascination with a long ago era.
I also love reading of today’s world. The hope that can be found in daily living, the questions that can be answered when we seek His light. Today’s young people give us hope that God’s word will continue as long as He allows this world to stand.
I have discovered that the books I enjoy the most combine both of these elements. Some, in a very literal way have simultaneous stories going on, one from the past, and one from the present world. The intersection of those stories makes exciting and satisfying reading.
Other books include multiple generations in the story. The young people of today discover that they are not so different from the young people in the past. All generations have so much to learn from each other.
No matter what you like to read, please continue to search. You might try branching out, reading something new, or looking back to something written long ago. Reading keeps your mind open to new possibilities, encourages you in your daily walk. You keep reading and my friends and I will keep writing. I promise!
In the comments, let me know what your favorite type of book includes. I will randomly choose a winner, and then, in the spirit of downsizing, I will send you a book from my own bookshelf. One that is selected especially for you. Because, the words in those books are not doing anyone any good unless they are shared!
Historical, Contemporary? Yes!

I love historical fiction and stories based on true events, but my favorite genre is actually biographies!

Have you read anything with a “time slip”? They combine present day with a story from the past. Really fun. Thanks for the comment!
