Today, I am honored to tell you about a new book by one of my favorite authors, Heather Greer. Her new book, Window of Opportunity will be available on January 10. The books I have read by Heather up to now are contemporary romances. This time, she takes us into the tumultuous years before the Second World War in America. My guest today is actually one of the lead characters in this new book, called Window of Opportunity. I can’t wait to let Heather’s book transport me to the past. Before we hear from Evangeline, here’s a summary of the book:
Faith and duty drive Evangeline Moore to protect her father’s pristine image as a judge in Harrisburg, Illinois. Her resolve’s biggest test? Dot, her childhood friend. With Evangeline beside her, Dot’s desire for the Roaring Twenties’ glitz and glamor leads the pair into questionable situations.
Born into a Chicago mob family, Brendan Dunne understands duty, but faith puts him at odds with his father’s demands. Even when his brother James’s propensity for trouble lands them in Harrisburg, the truth is undeniable. To their father, the lines he won’t cross mean Brendan will never measure up.
When circumstances push Brendan and Evangeline together, unexpected events create opportunity to break free of family expectations. Will they be brave enough to forge their own path before the window closes on their chance to change?
Without further ado, let’s welcome our guest and hear what she has to say to us today.
Jenny: Hello, please tell us your name, and where you are from.
Evangeline: Good morning. I’m so pleased to be with you today. My name is Evangeline Moore, and I’m from Harrisburg, Illinois.
Jenny: Could you share a little bit about your family and friends?
Evangeline: My father is a judge for Saline County. Due to his position, Mother and I are held to a higher standard in the community. It’s not an issue for me, personally, but it does create friction with my best friend, Dot. We’ve been friends for ages, but lately, her desire to escape the confines of Harrisburg for more metropolitan Chicago have caused some difficulties for me. Why, when Dot bobbed her hair and Mother heard we’d visited the barber shop it sent her into a fit. As usual, Dot did the questionable thing, and I was the one who got an earful.
Jenny: Isn’t that always the way it happens? So, what is going on in your life, and what do you look forward to in the future?
Evangeline: Harrisburg is growing so quickly. They say it may catch up to Chicago one day. I know all the advances of the 1920s are supposed to make life more pleasant, but there is a darker side too, even here in southern Illinois. My parents shield me, but I hear their talk. Massacres at the mines. Unsettling groups like this Ku Klux Klan that say they’re good, but they’re evil in disguise. And the mobsters. Though Mr. Birger’s gang and the Shelton brothers may have helped loosen the hold of the Klan in our area, now that their common enemy is gone, they’re turning on each other. Violence and innocents caught in the middle of it all. That’s what power and greed do to people.
I don’t mean to be so negative though. There are still a lot of good people in the world. And a lot of good advances. Electricity and indoor plumbing aren’t the standard yet, but they will be. And even Dot’s family, as poor as they are, have been able to purchase an automobile. These are wonderful things I believe will benefit us all. And have you tried potato chips from a bag? They stay so fresh and crunchy, and you don’t even have to order them special in a restaurant anymore.
Jenny: I agree on the bagged snacks. Great innovation for sure! Have you met anyone interesting lately? What intrigues you most about this person?
Evangeline: Oh, I have. That day when Dot bobbed her hair? Well, I met a gentleman named Brendan Dunne. He is so polite. After Dot left me stranded, he offered to walk me home. Mother would have a fit, so I declined. But Mr. Dunne wasn’t put off. He walked an acceptable distance behind me, until it began to rain. Then, he shared his umbrella with me. Mother wouldn’t approve, but it was worth it.
Jenny: What is the major obstacle or annoyance in your life these days?
Evangeline: My friendship with Dot. I love her like a sister. At least, I think I do. I don’t have any siblings. Anyway, she and I have been inseparable for years. But lately, she’s begun chasing after things I fear will only cause pain and leave her life empty in the future. I keep sharing my faith with her, but she won’t hear it. She’s determined the life she reads about in the magazines is the answer to all her problems. Our different priorities have caused some friction between us.
Jenny: How important is your faith in your daily life?
Evangeline: Faith is everything to me. I’m not perfect, but I want to be the person God created me to be. My desire is to show other God’s love and treat them the way God would have me treat them.
Jenny: Any parting words for our readers?
Evangeline: Sometimes due to our faith, we face difficult choices. The right path isn’t always clear. Take time to seek God’s direction. I believe, He will show you what to hold onto and when to let go. And if you mess up, God forgives and is big enough to work through whatever is happening in your life to bring out something beautiful.
Thanks so much, Evangeline. It’s always fun to hear from a character in an upcoming book. I’m excited about this one, especially since it is the first in a series. My two-be-read stack is feeling so happy right now!
This fascinating new book will release on January 10. Now is your chance to get your copy ordered.
