Protected. Sheltered. Safe.
Amidst the tumult of the past few months, how do we put these words into practice? The experts are telling us that the way to remain virus free is set ourselves apart. We must keep our distance, even from the people we trust, those we love, those we may or may not know. It has been difficult, but rewarding to do this. We have worked on the environment closest to us. Making sure our cabinets are well stocked, improving our homes, making our yards into showplaces. We have been content to a point, but now the puzzles have all been put together, our closets are organized, we are reaching the end of our recipe books. We long to get out into the world again.
The amazing thing is, that God has promised to go with us and protect us, even when we venture out. Out there, where the danger lurks. Yes, even there.
Psalm 91 has been a real source of strength for me during this time. The imagery is peaceful, of secret places, refuges, sheltering wings. But reading more closely, it is a story of protection in the midst of a battle.
“A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand, but it shall not come near you. Only with your eyes will you look, and see the reward of the wicked. Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge, Even the Most High, your dwelling place.” Psalms 91: 7-9 NKJV
This doesn’t mean nothing bad will happen to us. The psalmist is not saying that. He says “It shall not come near.” What is “it?” Go back to verse 5. “You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day.” God promises to protect us from Fear. From the shelter of His comforting wings, from His secret hiding place, we will see danger all around us and not be afraid. Think of looking down on the world from the window of an airplane. We are safe, protected, sheltered in Him. He says of us “I will set him on high, because he has known My name.” verse 14.
Amen. Get to know Him and let him shelter you from All of the dangers of this world.
